Rediscover Love with the Help of the 5 Best Marriage Counselling Services in Johor Bahru

  • Credentials and Experience – Our top entries for the best marriage counsellors must have solid credibility. We looked at each one’s certifications and overall experience.
  • Counselling Techniques – No case is like another, so we highly expect the top therapists to use a host of techniques. Whether that may be the likes of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), etc.
  • Active Communication – Sometimes, issues arise when communication isn’t right. Counselling for marriages on the rocks requires nuanced conversation skills that will heal, not worsen tense situations.

  • Empathy – We greatly appreciate couples therapists who have true empathy for the difficult situation of their respective clients.

Any couple who’s tied the knot is no stranger to the trials of married life. There are days you don’t want to end when everything is sunshine and rainbows, and there are days when opinions clash and issues arise.

Syoknya Kaunseling has been around for about five years and offers individual, couples, family, and organisational counselling services.

Its team is mainly made up of Malay Muslim registered counsellors—great for our Muslim brothers and sisters who seek premarital or married counselling.

Many clients praise this team for their warm and thoughtful approach. They take time to understand each couple’s situation, asking reflective questions and guiding them in uncovering shared (and even differing) values to help them move forward together.

We also appreciate the affordability of the sessions here. There are also package deals for three-session sets, which are a value for money for those seeking consistent guidance.

Reaching Syoknya Kaunseling is also easy via its website or WhatsApp.

That said, we heard from a few clients that certain sessions felt a bit off because of tone or demeanour. Still, these seem to be isolated instances, as most agree that the counsellors here handle their work sincerely and professionally.

Pros

  • Counselling for Muslim couples
  • Affordable pricing
  • Easy to contact
  • Has office and online sessions

Cons

  • Instances of “off” sessions
  • Fairly young operation

Created a safe space for us

“I’m really grateful for the couple counselling session with Aiman. He was very patient with us throughout, asking thoughtful questions. Starting from the basics to help us reflect on whether our values align as a couple, and gradually guiding us into deeper conversations. He facilitated the session professionally, creating a safe space for us to talk openly about our issues. It was truly helpful to have Aiman as a neutral third party to support us in understanding each other better and moving ahead together with more clarity and understanding.”

Internationally trained psychologist Amy has teamed up with a lifestyle and medical clinic to bring evidence-based psychotherapy to the people of Johor and internationally. Through the Happiness Project, she works to support mental health.

From our chat with her, we learned that her approach focuses on truly understanding each couple’s story: where each side comes from, what they need, and how they view the healing process.

We found that impressive because it’s rare to see a clinic that explicitly values and incorporates the clients’ own perspective in shaping their care.

It was tough to get firsthand feedback from past clients, likely because the clinic observes confidentiality deeply. However, those who’ve attended corporate group art sessions under the Happiness Project spoke highly of the experience.

We only hope that the clinic could open on weekends too, so those of us working regular weekday hours can also benefit from therapy more easily.

Pros

  • Serves JB and other countries
  • Incorporates the client’s view on healing
  • Upholds utmost confidentiality

Cons

  • Closed on weekends

Helped a lot with grief

A patient-centric approach that ended my search for a therapy center

“The Happiness Project (THP) is my third stop after less than satisfying encounters with two other psychologists.

Needless to say, with THP, my search for a therapy centre has come to an end.

THP is well setup with passionate individuals. Despite being relatively new, the therapist (Miss Kamini), the administrator (Miss Elva) & their team are undoubtedly therapy team par excellence.

THP is patient-centric; they were willing to tailor their sessions according to my needs. Patients should love this flexibility. […]”

Lively Space is a relatively small therapy provider based in JB. It offers both in-person and virtual sessions, covering psychotherapy, couples therapy, family therapy, and other group sessions, making it a flexible choice.

Many clients praise the Lively Space team for their professionalism, attentiveness, and warmth. The counsellors are also patient listeners who take the time to truly understand their clients’ concerns and guide them with care.

We also appreciate that its doors are open almost every day, except on Mondays. This is great for those who can’t make it on the weekdays at all.

On a lighter note, we love the fun little coincidence of a coffee shop right below the clinic.

Couples finishing an intense counselling session can grab a cup of coffee to celebrate a breakthrough. Now that’s a charming (albeit 100% optional) conclusion to the Lively Space experience.

Pros

  • Offers in-person and virtual sessions
  • Patient and warm approach
  • Only Mondays off
  • Great location

Cons

  • Relatively small operation

“Have been seeing Adrienne at Lively for about half a year, am always looking forward to my sessions as I feel safe and heard. She helps me understand my thoughts and explains them in a way I can reflect and apply them to my daily life or when I go through dark times.

The office space is cozy and nice, I always stop downstairs for coffee or bbt after a crying sesh lol. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a professional therapist in JB!”

One of the more established counselling services on our list is LG Life Development, founded in 2015. With over 11 years of experience, its founder, Ms Jenny, has worked with individuals and families, and has built a strong reputation in marriage counselling.

We’re in awe of how Ms Jenny keeps herself busy with online seminars and speaking engagements. This doesn’t stop her from giving full attention to her in-clinic and online clients.

Many have praised her quality care and guidance, often describing her as patient, insightful, and genuinely compassionate. Some even noted that Ms Jenny’s empathy and professionalism are equal for all ethnicities and cultures.

The only downside we need to note is the clinic’s rather confusing operating hours. The starting and closing hours don’t seem to have a clean pattern, which can make recalling and booking tricky.

We hope that’s one thing that gets streamlined soon.

Pros

  • Over 10 years in service
  • Insightful and genuine empathic advice
  • Equal treatment regardless of race
  • Has online and in-person sessions

Cons

  • Schedule varies too much per day

Inclusive counselling advice

Agape Counselling Centre is perhaps the oldest counselling service in JB, having opened back in 1994. With its longstanding mission to support the community holistically and build a more loving society, it became a trusted name over the years.

We put Agape in our list because it has many therapists who specialise in family and marriage counselling. It’s also worth noting that some counsellors here are Christians, which is a plus for couples who want a faith-based approach.

One Agape approach that caught our eyes is Sand Tray Therapy. While we initially thought it was meant only for kids, we found out that it’s a unique (and dare we say satisfying) method also used effectively in adults.

Agape also serves clients from various backgrounds and offers sessions in Bahasa, Mandarin, and English. Plus, they’re available on Saturdays and can even accommodate late evening and early morning online counselling sessions.

On the downside, since Agape Counselling Centre is one of the most established and affordable options in the area, slots tend to go fast. If you’re in the midst of a crisis and need an urgent appointment, the waitlist can get frustrating.

Pros

  • 30+ years in service
  • Marriage and family therapy speciality
  • Sand Tray Therapy available
  • Trilingual advice
  • Has late evening online sessions
  • Best for faith-based counselling

Cons

  • May have a long waitlist
  • Christian approach may not be for everyone

Comfortable counselling that respects client wishes

“The counselors were all very professional. During the counseling process, they were all willing to listen and respect the client’s wishes and decisions. The entire counseling process was comfortable, and I was able to obtain a solution that suited me.

(辅导老师都很专业。在辅导的过程 都很愿意倾听,并且尊重咨询者本身的意愿和决定。整个咨询过程很舒服 并且能够得到适合自己的方案。)”
