Shopping at the mall is good and all, but I’m sure some of you, our dear readers, have had issues with finding clothes that fit and flatter the figure (sometimes, even much better than the top aesthetic clinics in KL).
Thank goodness that the good old solution, going to a tailor, is still available in this time and age. There’s one just around the corner from my home, but do you know where the best ones are near yours?

How much do tailors charge for clothing alterations in Malaysia?
Tailors in Malaysia typically charge from RM15 to RM45 for simple alterations like waist or length adjustments. More complex tasks like adjusting seams can cost above RM60.
1. Jin Ping Alteration

We’re starting with a humble spot in George Town. Jin Ping Alterations, owned by Mr Daniel Khoo, is a small stall in Cecil Street Market with a loyal following.
The stall looks simple, almost bare-bones, lah. But there’s a quiet charm in its neat setup and tidy arrangement: the first clue to how efficient and reliable the service here is.
Mr Khoo looks like the typical market uncle, but he’s exceptionally skilled in tailoring. After sending in a pair of pants for a cut, we saw every stitch is precise and carefully done—the attention to detail really shows in the product.
Customers also appreciate his warm and understanding nature. He’s known for accommodating urgent requests (but please don’t take advantage of it too much).
Beyond alterations, Jin Ping Tailoring also takes on custom orders like company uniforms, evening gowns, and three-piece suits. Just note that the stall operates only half a day every day in the afternoons.

Kuala Lumpur has no shortage of shops for Western-style custom suits. But if you’re a lady searching for beautifully made Indian formal wear, Bolly Fashion Tailoring is the place to go.
Located right in the Indian enclave Brickfields, this shop specialises in tailoring and alterations for traditional pieces. Many customers come here for custom lehengas and saris, as the tailors are tip top in aari, a form of intricate embroidery.
Stepping into Bolly Fashion is a pleasant experience. The team, including the owner, is warm and easy to talk with; we never felt paiseh in our chat.
The dresses here are truly stunning, with clients often praising the flawless stitching and unique designs. We see every piece is made with passion and precision.
We also appreciate its long operating hours and weekend availability. Although it’s on an appointment-only setup, we get it since this ensures every client gets the time and attention they deserve.

3. Intaku’Design

Our Muslim sisters in Johor Bahru have their fashion needs well taken care of by Intaku Design. Established in 2012, this shop makes custom dresses, ready-to-wear (RTW) garments, and all kinds of alterations.
What we like most about Intaku Design is its very affordable pricing for altering clothes. Our test run showed that the stitching work is clean albeit being relatively cheap; .
That said, we almost got lost looking for the shop, thanks to its location away from the main road. But we’re relieved that it continues to attract loyal customers despite the ‘hidden’ location.
Its reach also extends beyond JB as clients from Singapore can send their clothes for altering here. On top of that, Intaku can also pick up and deliver to customers with more than three garments needing work.
Overall, we see that Intaku Design is a tailoring shop with a ‘can do’ and thoughtful attitude in doing business.

4. Seng Tailor

Perhaps the oldest operation on our list, Sabah’s Seng Tailor has been offering custom prices, alterations, and embroidery services for over 30 years. We couldn’t believe our eyes, because the shop’s old-school look doesn’t match what it offers.
We really judged the book by the photography of its (old) cover and were proven completely wrong. Seng Tailor is actually a mantap and capable establishment that makes uniforms, suits, traditional costumes, and all kinds of alterations.
Many of its clients have been with them for years, and some mentioned that they keep coming back because of the shop’s fast and detailed work. The owner and staff are also known for being considerate and keen on customers’ preferences, old or modern style.
Seng Tailor’s services might not be the cheapest in the area, but the prices are fair when you consider the quality of its work.

Melaka’s Alteration Center is a charming standalone shop set in a bungalow right in the middle of a residential area. Owned and run by a lovely two-person family team, the shop impressed us with how smooth and organised its operations are.
They masterfully alter common clothing pieces like pants, jeans, shirts, robes, and blouses for very affordable prices, which explains why they’re popular among locals. We’ve seen the precise stitching for simple and detailed jobs ourselves.
However, keep in mind that appointments are required before dropping by. For those outside Melaka, you’re in luck because the shop accepts orders shipped in.
It’s also nice to see how the Alteration Center keeps up with the times. They used to have a physical rewards card for regular customers, but now everything has been updated to a fully digital system.
